If you’re new to ereaders you should know a few things.
- The Ereader Display – Most eReaders today will use eInk technology. This technology makes the screen look like real paper and this is really cool, because you can read at any angle and in any lighting with absolutely no strain on the eyes. Consider the size of the display. Today’s eReaders come with sizes starting at 5-6 inches and the biggest is on the Kindle DX, which is 9.7 inches.
- The Size of the eReader – eReaders spell portability. Choose one that would fit your personal needs. For example, personally I feel that the Kindle DX, although providing the best WOW factor, is a little to big to carry around in my compact bag. Wieght is also an issue, but nowadays most of them are just fine.
- Available Formats – Some readers will support only a few formats while others will support a wide variety. The Amazon Kindle, for example, doesn’t support direct PDF reading. It uses a conversion process to convert your PDF to something it could digest. Not a perfect solution. Sony PRS-700 and the Kindle XD, on the other hand, support PDF files as well as many other formats.
- Battery life- The coolest thing about eReaders is that the battery would last up to 2 weeks. The eInk technology makes the device use the battery only when turning pages. When content is displayed, the battery is not being used!
- Warranty – keep in mind that these are new gadgets. It is important to have at least a 1 year long warranty and if a store offers you to purchase additional warranty, it is probably a good idea.
